It is with great sadness that Priority Distribution Inc. (PDI) announced the death of Daniel J. McElroy on October 8, due to complications arising from his ongoing battle with cancer. Mr. McElroy passed peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. Mr. McElroy was Founder, President, and CEO of PDI, an integrated logistics and transportation management company, headquartered in East Brunswick, New Jersey.
Mr. McElroy founded PDI, in 1987, after clients of his successful independent brokerage business convinced him to provide more comprehensive transportation management services. Over the next two decades Mr. McElroy continued to grow PDI, adding a broader range of value-add services to support his companies expanding customer base. Today, PDI's services range from literally every mode of transportation to integrated warehousing and distribution. More recently, Mr. McElroy invested in a best-of-breed technology that enabled him to transform PDI into a technologically advanced third-party logistics company. Despite all these changes, Mr. McElroy never lost sight of his roots and the personalized brand of service that had ensured the company's success since its' founding.
"My father was always an inspiration to me, as well as many others, from both a business and a personal perspective. He was such a strong leader, building a successful company with a small original investment, hard work, and a solid business ethic. Even when he encountered obstacles, his attitude was always upbeat and positive. He will be sorely missed but PDI will proudly carry on the tradition he started" remarked Andrew, Mr. McElroy's son and current Vice President of Business Development for the company.
Mr. McElroy was born October 3, 1948 in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in North Arlington, NJ before relocating to central New Jersey to start his family and his company. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve during the Vietnam War. He began his career with Red Star Express as a night shift customer service clerk working his way through the corporation until he eventually held the position of National Accounts Sales Manager. Prior to founding PDI, he founded Andrew's Express a regional LTL carrier named after his son. Mr. McElroy is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary; son, Andrew; in-laws Rita and Larry Lloyd of Milltown, NJ; and his brother and sister in-law Ray and Phyllis Lloyd of Branchburg, NJ.
